Exploring Entebbe: Uganda’s Most Underrated Getaway

arthur April 25, 2026 2 min read

An hour south of Kampala, Entebbe sits quietly on the northern shore of Lake Victoria — and it might just be Uganda’s most underappreciated city for travellers.

Most visitors treat Entebbe as a transit point: fly in, clear customs, head straight to Kampala. That’s a mistake.

A Town Built Around the Lake

Entebbe’s pace is fundamentally different from Kampala’s. The roads are quieter, the air is cleaner, and the lake is everywhere. From almost any part of town you can see or feel the water. For anyone arriving from a city that never stops moving, that alone is worth staying for.

The Botanical Gardens

The Entebbe Botanical Gardens sit right on the lake shore and remain one of the most peaceful green spaces in East Africa. The gardens have been used as a filming location for multiple international productions and are home to a remarkable variety of bird species. Entry is inexpensive and the gardens are rarely crowded.

Lakeside Dining

The restaurant strip along the lake road offers some of the freshest tilapia and Nile perch you will eat anywhere in the world — pulled directly from Lake Victoria that morning. Pair that with a cold Club beer and a sunset over the water, and you have one of Uganda’s simplest, finest pleasures.

Close to Everything

From Entebbe, Kampala is a straightforward 45-minute drive on a good day. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) is within the town itself. And Ngamba Island — the chimpanzee sanctuary — is just a short boat ride away.

Where to Stay

CalmStay has several properties in Entebbe, from lakeside studios to quiet garden apartments near the airport. Whether you’re transiting through or deliberately slowing down, there’s a calm stay waiting for you here.
